QuiltCon was held at the Convention Center in downtown Austin. There were many wonderful quilts. These are just a few that caught my imagination.
There was a special exhibit of quilts by Denyse Schmidt. They struck me as a blend of Modern and traditional all in one. The one above is “Roots, Ginger” completed in 1998.
The quilt shown above is “The Local Quilt” by fellow Floridan, Carolyn Friedlander and it features her new fabric line, Architextures. It won a ribbon for the Best Machine Quilting.
“Spin Dr” is made and quilted by Angela Walters.

“Overgrown” is made by Alison Glass and quilted by Lisa Sipes and it won Viewers Choice. You can see a better photo of it here along with some of the other award winners.
“Adrift, ” shown above, is made by Tina Michalik and quilted by Susan Spencer won the Judges Choice Award.
“Fresh Plus” by Kathy York won Honorable Mention in the Modern Traditionalism category.
“Broken Cogs” was made by Jacquie Gering and quilted by Angela Walters.
“Paper Shredder” is by Pamela Johnson.
“Mobile” by Elizabeth Brandt” won First Place for the Use of Negative Space category.
Although, the Modern Quilt Guild works hard to distinguish traditional and art quilts from Modern Quilts, some of the following amazing Modern quilts fall into the Art quilt category in my opinion.
“Pointless” is by Laura Bisagna.
“You Rule” is by Brigitte Heitland.
“Bang! You’re Dead” is made by Jacquie Gering and quilted by Anne Christopher.
“269 – 2 + 2″ is by Colleen Wootton and won 2nd place for Minimalist Design.

I doubt I will ever tire of looking at these amazing pieces. I especially loved seeing the quilting up close again.

It was inspiring. I really like Angela Walter’s quilting. Ever since we returned I have been itching to sew, but there have been so many other responsibilities calling.
